Does your bathroom make you cringe or sigh in disappointment every time you walk in?  Then it is time to remodel!  Bathroom remodeling can be incredibly rewarding if it is done right, and one of the best ways to get your remodel off to a great start is to have a great plan in place before you start.  So before you begin ripping fixtures out of your bathroom, spend some time planning with these three steps.  Not only will the finished product be better, but the whole process will be smoother as well!

Set Your Budget

Bathroom remodeling can get expensive very quickly if you let it.  So before you start picking out your dream vanity, take a look at your finances.  How much do you actually want to spend on the remodel?  Will you take money out of savings, or can you pay for items as you go?  With clear financial boundaries in place, you will not be tempted to overspend on things that aren’t really that important to you, and your resources will go to the places where they will make the biggest impact.

Prioritize Needs and Wants

Once you know how much you are able to spend, it is time to decide where it is most important to spend those resources.  Go through your bathroom and make notes on what bothers you the most and what you actually don’t mind the way it is. 

If there are any functionality issues (leaky faucets, etc.), those should go at the top of the list.  If everything is working properly, it is up to you to decide which you want to change most - the wall color you hate or the shower head that is too short?  List everything you might want to change, even if you don’t think you’ll have the money for it - you never know what might be possible!

Get Inspired

Now that you have a plan in place, it is time to go shopping!  Though you may not actually buy anything at this time, look at options for the top three or four items you listed in step two.  Choose the ones you like best (be sure to visualize them in the same space to ensure they will go well together) and note the cost of each item.  Remember that installation costs will use part of your budget as well, so don’t allocate more than half of your budget during this initial planning phase!
